Andrew Rice is a student journalist with more than three years of experience reporting on the community at Appalachian State University. He reports on topics ranging from breaking news, election coverage and human interest stories for The Appalachian, App State’s student-run newspaper. He hails from North Carolina, originally from the Raleigh-Durham region, one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the United States, before moving to Boone to study journalism at Appalachian State University. These experiences have given him profound insight into vastly different communities and what makes each community unique and worth being shared, making him a better journalist.
He has a specific fascination with political journalism and has served as the Political Editor for The Appalachian, spearheading the coverage of the 2022 midterm elections. In his time as political editor, he emphasized coverage that appealed to readers who were voting for the first time as well as seasoned voters who were intimately familiar with the process. The diversity of his community has always shaped his reporting and getting information out in a timely manner that represents the widest range of perspectives has always been in the forefront of his reporting. He passionately seeks to understand the complexities of the communities he lives in and learn each day, a process that began when he grew up in one of the fastest growing areas in the United States and when moving to Boone.
Covering a wide range of topics has been something that motivates his writing and informs the way he tells stories. This motivation brought him to the position of Associate Enterprise Editor with the Appalachian where he sought to pursue narrative journalism. He expanded his storytelling methods to engage audiences with compelling stories on niche communities and people. The environment of Boone provided a plethora of opportunities to tell stories and narratives that were engaging and compelling ranging from team profiles to primarily Black communities in Boone.
He is committed to upholding the standards outlined in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics. In reporting any variety of story, seeking truth and reporting it is a standard of highest importance to him. He also recognizes the potential for harm in the lives of those who choose to share personal stories to inform his writing and will protect his sources. In addition, he will not hold membership to any political organization, donate to a political cause or demonstrate for a particular cause. Additionally, he ensures that his coverage is fair and adequately representative of the diversity of human experience.
